The common ostrich is the largest and heaviest bird in the world. It is flightless and lives in the savannah and semi-desert plains of Africa, a habitat which provides for a quick getaway if it is threatened. It only has two toes on each foot which is also thought to enhance its running capability.
Ostriches form creches for their chicks, where 1 or 2 adults supervise a large brood from multiple family groups. This childcare system protects the young from predators and ensures no chick strays from the group. The chicks also use the adults shadow to keep cool.
