There are thought to be about 375 species of humming bird, and most of these are found in Central and Southern America. In this painting I have ruby-throated hummingbirds feeding from the nectar of the tubular shaped flowers of the salvia. Their wings beat at around 53 times per second which produces the humming sound. It enables them to hover, fly backwards and even upside down. They are the smallest and fastest of all warm blooded creatures on earth.
