Between 1475 and 1650 at least 15 fishing villages on the coast of Zeeland were destroyed by fierce storms when the dykes failed. The Plompe Toren was part of a church in Koudekerke and is the only thing that remains of this once prosperous village. Today it functions as a tourist centre.
This coastline has long since been protected against flooding by the Delta Project, a network of dams, sluices, locks and storm barriers, widely regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the modern world.
