Leafy sea dragons are found on the southern and western coasts of Australia. Here they are known as “leafies” and have been adopted as a State emblem. They use their leaflike fronds as camouflage in areas of dense seaweed where they are very difficult to spot with the untrained eye.
They belong to the family of seahorses and feed on small crustaceans which they suck up through their tubular snouts. The biggest threat that they face is at the hands of the aquarium trade poachers.
