When a male gorilla reaches maturity there is a change in his physique and appearance. The hair on his back turns to silver. There can be more than one male in a family group but only one of them will be dominant, responsible for keeping order in the group and defending them against enemies or predators.

There is an hierarchy in gorilla groups among the male silverbacks. The dominant male is the group leader.
