The South Devon coastline is a mixture of wide sandy beaches, sheltered coves and sections of high granite cliffs and rocky headlands. With a stiff southwesterly wind the sea can be whipped up into ferocious surf that pounds against these ramparts. Holiday makers have little use for these sea conditions.

For locals and holiday makers alike it is best to stay out of the sea when conditions are so violent.
