Fishermen mending their nets

85cm x 49.5cm
Cobra water mixable oils on textured board.

Local fishermen squat on the beach to mend their nets in Bonaire. I had made a sketch of this dilapidated shack during a diving trip to Bonaire in 2006. I was attracted to the primitive construction made from driftwood and other waste or discarded materials. The addition of the fishermen mending their nets gave a focal point to the composition.I chose my colours and tones to create a sense of the intense heat experienced on tropical islands, important to this aim was the depth and colour of the sky against the glare of the sand and gravel beach.
